Trojan Technologies has forged partnerships with top LED suppliers which grant us access to early prototypes and have allowed us to collaborate to advance LED technology based on customer application needs. While we have been monitoring the development of UV LED since 2010, in 2020, we began testing different UV LED lamps by installing them in our traditional UV systems and evaluating their performance.
Evaluating LED properties including radiant flux, wavelength profiles, spatial emission profiles, and forward voltage under varying temperatures and drive currents.
Lifetime testing of both individual LEDs and LED arrays in a UV system for up to 10,000 hours at various temperatures, duty cycles, and water qualities.
Assessment of UV LED performance in a UV system including integration of mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and controls components.
Bioassays of various UV LED system designs to characterize UV microbiological inactivation performance.
The Benefits of UV LED
While it’s still an evolving technology, we’ve determined that UV LED has many benefits over traditional mercury lamps for UV treatment, including:
Instant on/off (no warm-up time)
Unlimited cycling/multiple duty cycles without impact on lamp life
Wide dimming range (dim to <1%)
Compact footprint
High power density
Design flexibility
The Best Applications Today for UV LED
Through hundreds of hours of testing, we’ve determined the ideal applications for current UV LED technology include:
Residential and point-of-use systems
Consumer appliances
Specialty low-flow applications where compact size and instant operation are beneficial
What’s next for Trojan Technologies and UV LED?
At Trojan, research and development is constant, and we’re committed to investing time and resources to ensure we can bring the best UV LED water treatment systems to the market. We’re continuing to collaborate with all major UV LED suppliers, and to tailor UV LED technology based on customer application needs.
Most importantly, we’re going to commit to developing strategic partnerships to promote the use of UV LED for suitable applications. And through our extensive research and development, we’ve identified great potential using UV LED in the pharmaceutical industry.
